Course: Introduction to Evolution

As the summer winds down, it is time to start thinking about this fall’s classes.  My personal favorite class to teach is “Introduction to Evolution”.  We will spend 15 weeks digging through Carl Zimmer’s “The Tangled Bank” textbook.

Topics to be discussed include:

• Geology
• Phyologeny
• Genetics
• Mutation
• Various selective pressures
• Speciation
• Macroevolution and microevolution
• Primate evolution (including humans)
• And much more

There are a number of tremendous introductory videos about evolution.  Here are a couple of well-produced examples:

It is interesting to note that both videos touch on the evolution of whales since that is where we start in the first chapter of our evolution textbook.
