  1. Why was the original understanding of how the MAC usually works misled by the cell choice in the study (red blood cells)?
  2. Describe the steps of the complement cascade that are important for resistance to Neisseria menengitidis?  How does the sequence of events that you just described differ from the complement cascade linked to Neisseria gonorrhea resistance as described earlier in the chapter?
  3. Complement fragment C3d is involved in B cell “co-ligation” to antigen.  Draw a schematic showing how C3 can be broken down to C3d.  Describe how this fragment is involved in B cell binding to antigen.
  4.  The book describes a paradox in SLE.  Complement activation and complement deficiency are both implicated in SLE.  How can both of these complement-related be true?
